Padma Bhushan Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan preformed an unusual piece based on the story of Shabari and her meeting Ram. During her performance, all eyes were glued to the stage. She enacted the various characters – Shabari, Ram and other sages with enormous dexterity.
As outstanding artists of the ICCR, they have performed in almost all major National and International Festivals and in over 60 countries, including USA, Europe, Latin America, Japan, Portugal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji etc. International Ocean Festival, Mauritius, Int. Jerash Festival, Syria, Adelaide Festival, Australia, Delhi Days in Moscow, Delhi Govt, Cervantino Festival, Mexico, Sanskriti Festival London, China, Japan, Malaysia, and Bangkok visit in 2004, for the celebration of 50 years of Panchsheel Agreement, are to name a few. They have performed in almost every India Festival all over the globe ranging from California, Malaysia, Brazil, and Canada to Mauritius.
She has travelled in India and abroad for Recitals, Lectures and workshops. She has published four art books in dance and music.
She has also compiled an Encyclopedia on Bharatnatyam for NCERT. As a Choreographer she has also choreographed scores of enthralling ballets on mythology and social themes very well appreciated by the audience and the press. As a Guru she runs a fine art institution Ganesa Natyalaya in 1974 in Delhi.
Her passion for art in general is reflected from the fact that she built a Kathak School in Bhagalpur in Bihar “Sharadha Sangeet Sadan”in 1972. She surrendered the accommodation given to her in Delhi by the Government of India under the eminent artists category in ASIAD village in 1996 and moved to the premises of Ganesa Natyalaya Mezzanine floor so as to devote the maximum time and propagate this art form.
She is the chairperson of National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (Govt. Of India). She has choreographed and Directed a Bharatnatyam Cultural Segment for the XIX Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and is constantly involved in Charity shows for raising funds to the cancer society and also the charitable institutions, serving for blind, handicapped and physically challenging people.
She has been honored by several prestigious awards, the recipient of Padmashree and Padma Bhushan from Government of India, Delhi State award from S.K.P., Kalimamani from Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Sangeet Nataka Akademi award,Kalidas Samman from Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, D.Litt from IKSVV(Khairagarh) Vayo Sreshta Samman Award from Govt. Of India, Ambassador of Peace by IIFWP and Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award. She has also received fellowship from Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India for “Aharya Abhinaya”. She has also compiled and produced a DVD, based on the fundamentals and nuances of Bharatnatyam, an educative and entertaining capsule for an hour, in 2014.
